“To a Soldier”
by Susan Elaine Shankle
We in the homeland can't really fathom
What you're going through
If it's any consolation, though,
Our prayers are with you
Real enemies are something few of us
Civilians ever think about
Coming face to face with them in literal battle one knows
And there's absolutely no room for doubt
We civilians wish we could do
More for you guys than just pray...
We wish we could do something
To attain instant result
Something to get you out
Of the uninvited tumult
We feel our hands are tied...
We feel our backs are against the wall
We just want you home with us on familiar ground
In one piece, that's all
We know that you have the best
Military capabilities at your fingertips...
With everything Uncle Sam can afford
We wish that this battle
Wasn't ours to fight anymore
As long as you need our support, though,
We're here for you
Although we may not fight in the actual battle,
We feel that praying is the least we can do
God may not be your secret weapon...
The One you call on in your hour of need
As Christians, though, remember
That you've got an intercessor...
There's a light at the end of the tunnel;
Your case He'll forever and always plead.
